Criminal lawyer José Carlos Fragoso was, alongside his brother Fernando, a partner at Fragoso Advogados, one of Brazil’s most long-established law firms. He was a co-founder and the first treasurer of the Society of Criminal Lawyers of the State of Rio de Janeiro (SACERJ) and worked on cases of national significance, such as those involving the Delfin and Coroa-Brastel economic groups, Banco Marka, the murder of socialite Ângela Diniz, and the sinking of the *Bateau Mouche IV* in Guanabara Bay on New Year’s Eve 1989.

As a professor, José Carlos taught at Candido Mendes University. The son of the renowned jurist Heleno Cláudio Fragoso, he was recognized for his profound legal knowledge and his unwavering defense of human rights and constitutional guarantees.

He passed away in 2003 at the age of 49.
